At list once in a life, every wave searcher should surf at Sri Lanka. Even more all those attracted by oriental mystic and yoga. Buddha footprints are as present in the old Ceylon as the tuktuks and the surfboards. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, with coral reefs, quality waves had to be present. Hollow and poweful or long rides? It doesn’t matters. There are waves for everyone here. Even to get started in surfing. In 2022, Malamalama begins a three-months residence in the South of the ” Shining Island” in winter, to runaway from the European cold. All the ingredients are served. A paradise island. Awesome waves. Warm weather. Raw spirituality. And Malamalama Family over there to give you the best service.

Sri Lanka Surf at Mirissa Beach

At Sri Lanka there are two main surf areas. South and East. We go to the South. Easier to reach. More versatile.

Also, we like to go there on winter. Runaway from the cold to surf in boardshorts. At that time, the Maha Monsoon is hiting the West, so the famous Arugam Bay is not nice. Nevertheless, in the South, at our home, Yala Monsoon arrives in summer.

Our lodge is located in Mirissa. The beach, 5 minutes away, is a legendary coral reef spot. There’s an awesome right wave, easily over a meter. Just take care with the coral and the sea urchins in the last section… If you are not that skilled, you have Welligama a couple kilometres away, with a nice and friendly beach break. We go there for the rental and the lessons. It’s a long beach with lots of line ups for everyone.

Also there are other neat spots. Madiha, Midigama, Dickwella, Hiriketiya… Each kilometre a new beach. All good for surfing. Each one different from the other.

At that time, the weather is between 25 and 30 degrees in the outside and about 28 degrees in the water… There’s no need to say that you don’t need to put the wetsuir on you baggage.

surf tuk tuk on the beach

Sri Lanka is a rare case. It’s been a commercial port through the centuries. Arabians, Portuguese, Dutchmen, British… Everyone has used the good old Ceylon as a trading point or as a farming area. Even though, Sri Lanka had managed to stay unaffected by the occidental charms. Only a few countries had preserved the rituals and traditions of ancient Buddism as Sri Lanka. Only in a few countries you can feel the Asian spirituality the same way. That’s why it’s one of the most requested destination by yoga lovers and buddist practice.

In our camp we have a perfect Yoga Shala for the daily practice, but if you are an experimented yogi, you should visit one of the mythical places. There are a lot of temples and Yoga Centers in the island. Also, is really nice to catch your mat and enjoy the sunrise or the sunset in the beach.

Our hostel at Mirissa has 6 double rooms. Three with a ceiling fan and 3 with A/C. Also, there are bunk beds rooms. Mixed or female only. Obviously those are way more cheap. If that’s what your looking for, please ask us, because the prices bellow are for the private rooms.

The facilities include a swimming pool, the Yoga Shala, hammocks for relaxing, an upper terrace chill out (perfect for the sunset yoga)… But, most of all, good vibes! Our guests are international, so cultural exchange is guaranteed.

Mirissa Beach is only 6 minutes away walking from the camp. 2 kms. to Welligama There are a lot of bars, restaurants and all kind of facilities in the surroundings, You can buy a nice vegetables curry with rice in the street food stands. A cocktail costs about 4 euros in the bars.

We have several tours for the non-surfing time (in case there are), the National Park of Uda Walawe to see the elephants, the temple of Perahena, the Dondra lighthouse, the Galle Fort, the sea turtles farm at Koggala… the old Ceylon is an awesome experience! Don’t stay only on the beaches!
