At Sri Lanka there are two main surf areas. South and East. We go to the South. Easier to reach. More versatile.
Also, we like to go there on winter. Runaway from the cold to surf in boardshorts. At that time, the Maha Monsoon is hiting the West, so the famous Arugam Bay is not nice. Nevertheless, in the South, at our home, Yala Monsoon arrives in summer.
Our lodge is located in Mirissa. The beach, 5 minutes away, is a legendary coral reef spot. There’s an awesome right wave, easily over a meter. Just take care with the coral and the sea urchins in the last section… If you are not that skilled, you have Welligama a couple kilometres away, with a nice and friendly beach break. We go there for the rental and the lessons. It’s a long beach with lots of line ups for everyone.
Also there are other neat spots. Madiha, Midigama, Dickwella, Hiriketiya… Each kilometre a new beach. All good for surfing. Each one different from the other.
At that time, the weather is between 25 and 30 degrees in the outside and about 28 degrees in the water… There’s no need to say that you don’t need to put the wetsuir on you baggage.
